Transgender Day of Remembrance

The QRC would like to invite you to join us for Transgender Day of Remembrance. The event is November 20th, at 6 pm in the Stevenson Union.

TDOR is a day set aside to remember trans folks anywhere under the umbrella who have lost their lives to violence. In TDOR we seek to remember those who have been lost, come together for healing and support, and denounce this kind of violence as a community.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is set in Race Awareness Month. It is critical for any discussion of trans remembrance to highlight the intersection of race and gender. Transgender women and people of color are the most heavily affected by this violence because of the combination of racism and anti-transgender hate. If we separate these factors or only focus on one in memorial, we erase nuanced lives that did not revolve around a single identity. In order for our activism to be successful, we must center the issues of race, class, and more in our discussion of anti-transgender violence.

“There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives.”
- Audre Lorde

Let’s keep these words in mind as we remember the lives that have been lost, and celebrate the lives that we are still living. Join us for a day of remembrance and a week of celebration! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at our email qrc@sou.edu or on our Facebook page, where we will also be highlighting living transgender activists in the days leading up to TDOR.
