Hi all! My name is Sam Manilla, I’m one of the department’s resident Prop Masters, and I will be hosting a FREE SketchUp workshop sponsored by USITT on January 25th from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the Staver Design Studio. SketchUp is a user-friendly 3D modeling program that is a great way to get introduced to thinking in 3D, and you can make some really cool stuff! No experience needed!!
We will cover the Advanced Tool Box, Layers, Scenes, the 3D Warehouse, and (time permitting) I will show off how to turn your SketchUp model into a 3D-printable file. The workshop will consist of a lecture-style instructional time, and a couple of assignments so everyone can hone their skills and become master SketchUp...ers…
I spent a week over this past summer as a TA for a week-long SketchUp intensive course provided by OCA’s MoTS program, and I wanted to make that knowledge available to our own department. 3D modeling is a useful skill for everybody in theatre because it can be used to communicate your ideas. This skill isn’t just useful for Scenic Designers; everybody should have the skills to bring their ideas to life. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a 3D model is an Odyssey of information. This workshop is designed to give you the skills you need to be able to sit down and quickly put together a model that you can show and explain to others.
Why SketchUp? Well, SketchUp is ridiculously user-friendly. It is just simple enough to be helpful, yet just advanced enough to be able to do some pretty impressive stuff. SketchUp is also great for practicing spatial skills so you can get more comfortable thinking with 3D space.
There are limited seats available, so sign up soon! A sign-up sheet will be posted on the notice board by the Scene Shop. I hope to see many bright, smiling faces on the 25th; it'll be a great time.
