“A work really develops only in a live performance,” the Schumann Quartet says. “That is ‘the real thing,’ because we ourselves never know what will happen. On the stage, all imitation disappears, and you automatically become honest with yourself. Then you can create a bond with the audience — communicate with it in music.” The three brothers Mark, Erik and Ken Schumann have been playing together since their earliest childhood.
A high school teacher of German with no formal conservatory training, Jon Nakamatsu’s electrifying performance won him the Gold Medal at the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition amidst a field of experienced competition warriors. Now known internationally for the panache and elegance of his performances, he has become a favorite with audiences throughout the world.
