In May 2019, Southern Oregon University will host the 1st annual Pacific Islander Indigeneity and Education Conference (PIIEC). For more than 20 years Pacific Islander students have walked to the grounds of SOU. In recent times, a group of Pacific Islander students came together to lead the charge of creating a promising space for Pacific Islanders at SOU and across Oregon’s Higher Education system to talk about their issues and share out to each other and ally community members about Pacific Islander history, culture, education, research, and how these students have persisted through college. This conference also asks students to think about how they plan to intersect their career goals with their indigenous cultural beliefs.
