DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming Dr. Roger McDonald\, as he discusses the c
ause of aging.\n\nWe now know the cause of aging. More importantly\, we kn
ow what can be done to alter the course of aging. This relatively new unde
rstanding has done away with the long-held view that advanced age results
in disease and decline. Rather\, for the first time\, we have intervention
s that slow the rate of aging and extend the healthy lifespan. This new ag
e of aging means that the vast majority of individuals alive today have th
e potential to lead active and productive lives well into advanced age. We
will examine the evidence that led to the discovery of the cause of aging
. Research results from such diverse fields as philosophy\, physics\, evol
ution\, and molecular biology will be used to explain what you can do to i
nfluence the manner in which you age. \n\nDr. McDonald is Professor Emerit
us in the Department of Nutrition at the University of California\, Davis
. He received his Ph.D. in Exercise Biology at the University of Southern
California while studying at the Andrus Gerontology Center. Dr. McDonald's
research focuses primarily on mechanisms of cellular aging and the intera
ction between nutrition and aging. He is the author of the textbook\, The
Biology of Aging.\n\nFriday Science Seminar is a free event and open to th
e public. Please visit our website for future lecture series details.\n\nL
ight refreshments provided by the STEM Division.
