Join the Friends of Hannon Library for the fourth event in their 2021 speaker series, Dangerous, Crooked Scoundrels: Insulting the President, from Washington to Trump with Edwin Battistella, on Thursday, April 15.
Author Edwin Battistella traces the ways in which presidents have been insulted over the centuries since the founding of the republic, selecting from over 500 examples he has collected in his upcoming book Dangerous Crooked Scoundrels (Oxford University Press, March 2020). Battistella shows that less has changed that you might think, as far as insults and political attacks are concerned.
Edwin L. Battistella teaches linguistics and writing at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. He is the author of six books including Sorry About That: the Language of Public Apology. Battistella contributes a monthly blog to Oxford University Press, called Between the Lines with Edwin Battistella. He also moderates the Literary Ashland blog and twitter feed. He served on the board of directors of Oregon Humanities from 2009-2015 and is on the editorial board of The Oregon Encyclopedia.
