Stairs in the Staircase - Sculpture Event at Hannon Library

Join the Creative Arts alumni, faculty, staff, and students, the Center for Visual Arts, and the Friends of Hannon Library on Friday, November 17 from 4-6pm to celebrate artistic interventions! This free and open to the public event will mark the opening of "Stairs in the Staircase" consisting of 21 ceramic sculptures and work by 32 recent SOU alumni, plus the closing of the exhibition "The Sculpture-4D Collective Welcomes You."

The Sculpture/4D Collective is an ever rotating group of artists focused around the SOU Sculpture Program in the DeBoer Sculpture Building.  We are interested in making experimental artworks that take up physical and/or time-based space.  Overall, these student artists have been encouraged to joyfully hone technical and aesthetic skills to communicate big ideas about what is important to them and the questions that they have. In this show, we have sculptures from a variety of students at a variety of different artmaking levels: art majors and non-art majors, introductory, intermediate, and graduating senior thesis work.

The display features the work of these talented SOU student artists:

Tam Varaday

Adam Garrett

Carli Lamberto

Jamison Winternitz

Naia Morgaine

Mel Villarreal

Diana Ramos

Chella Maize

Tatum Hazelton

Haley & Kayley Nichols

Jubilee Nelson Drake

The Sculpture/4D Collective and the SOU Sculpture Program first displayed work together as part of the Oregon Fringe Festival starting in 2022.  In April 2023 as the Fringe Festival opened, the Sculpture Program unveiled a new “temporary public sculpture garden” directly next door to the DeBoer Sculpture Building expanding the potential for what the Mary Campagna Sculpture Garden started.

In January 2023, we began a partnership with RecologyAshland: we welcomed the inaugural cohort of an SOU specific one-in-the-nation kind of Student-Artist-in-Residency program.  The program consists of SOU student artists applying to and becoming a cohort who have the opportunity to use materials found in RecologyAshland’s Valley View Transfer Station to make into art.  The inaugural cohort of four SOU student artists will exhibited their their work in the CVA Galleries last June. We were also lucky to collaborate with the Digital Cinema Program’s advanced documentary class to create several short documentaries about the residency’s first two months of growing pains and cold wet weather.

Also in April 2023, the Sculpture/4D Collective hosted LA based artist Alison O’Daniel for a lecture and studio visits with our students. Alison is a United States Artist 2022 Disability Futures Fellow and a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow in Film/Video and her film, The Tuba Thieves, premiered at Sundance 2023 and she did a q&a along with its screening in the Ashland Independent Film Festival.
