ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Award-winning pianist Chuan Choy is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree at Southern Oregon University under the tutelage of Dr. Alexander Tutunov, after earning his Bachelor of Music, magna cum laude, at the Fred Fox School of Music, University of Arizona. Chuan was inspired to pursue his degree in piano performance when he was an audience member in a piano competition in which he later became a prize-winner. His teachers include Drs. Fanya Lin, John Milbauer, and Ian Houghton. As a pedagogue, Chuan strives to help students discover the joy and nuance of piano playing.
Besides running his own private teaching studio, he is currently a graduate assistant at SOU where he collaborates with Chamber Choir and assists with group piano class.
As a performer, Chuan hopes to incorporate community outreach into his music performances. In the Summer of 2023, he performed to a full-house audience at the
Goethe-Institut Mexiko, Mexico City, with a cross-cultural themed recital. His 2023 solo recital at Rogue Community College inspired music students and received heartfelt reviews. He also performs regularly at Mountain Meadows retirement community and Rogue Valley Manor to extend his musical outreach. His performance at the SOU recital hall consisted of works such as Haydn’s Variation in F minor, Liebermann’s Nocturne no.2, and Shostakovich Piano Concerto no.2.
He has also performed in many masterclasses including Jon Nakamatsu, Anthony de Mare, and Michael Stephen Brown. Chuan’s performances have also earned him fine arts scholarship awards throughout his undergraduate degree and is currently on a full scholarship for his graduate degree. He is a prizewinner of the Michael Moore Memorial Piano Competition for two consecutive years performing works ranging from J.S. Bach to Henry Cowell.
As a pedagogue, Chuan wishes to cultivate curious minds and expand students’ musical horizons. He would like to help students to discover the joy and nuance of piano playing. As a graduate teaching assistant at the Southern Oregon University, Chuan teaches group piano class to music majors and non-major students, giving detailed and effective instructions to students, empowering them to be well-rounded musicians.
Upon receiving his Master of Music degree from SOU, Chuan has been awarded a Graduate College Fellowship in the coming Fall and will be pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Arizona.
This recital is under the direction of Dr. Alexander Tutunov.
