2023 Oregon Fringe Festival - sedateXart, Erika Marquez

It’s Not That Deep is about staying off the grid, trusting gut intuition, and living a life never fearing color because at the end of the day, it’s just not that deep. Similar to Erika’s past paintings, she began with a plan. However, she thought to herself, as deep as art can be, the process itself doesn’t need to be. So, she ditched her plan, painted over her layout of linework, and allowed her brush to flow. Erika began to trust herself just a little more with each mark, painting what she envisioned in the present moment.

Medusa’s Mutation spawned from a genetics course assignment in which Erika chose to highlight genetic mutations through a connection between Medusa’s ability to turn people into stone and the symptoms associated with the rare genetic disorder, Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva, which causes bone to form in unorthodox places in the body. Erika sees science as an art in itself, so this painting was a fun way to incorporate other interests of hers and showcase those interests through the best way that she knows how to, visual art.

Erika Marquez is an artist from Tucson, Arizona who has been painting since she was eleven years old. Beginning her artistic journey being taught realism under renowned artist, Guadalupe De La Torre, she has gained the technical tools to now shift her focus toward using her own personal life experiences and perspectives to portray the lens through which she sees life.
