Rapt is a single song from Derek Keller’s developing operatic multimedia work, Neurotica. The title is a play on words: neurosis and erotica. Neurosis can be loosely defined as our inability to cope with our surroundings. When we can’t cope, some of us display neurotic behavior. These behaviors are displayed in myriad ways, usually accompanied by phobias and anxieties. Yet, speaking for himself and society’s own ‘mobile’ reflections, there are particularly, and morbidly, interesting ones amplified in the cybernetic spaces and our concomitant obsessions with them. Derek, specifically, has uncountable neuroses, and they are all amplified in the cybernetic spaces and the way in which he experiences them through his cell phone, particularly “fomo,” or the ‘fear of missing out.’ He emphasizes that he is not alone either. So, to these spaces, Derek offers Neurotica, a set of songs for a sole performer and multimedia.
Bernadette Mondok Keller teaches piano and voice through Mondok Music Scholars, LLC. She is an Adjunct Instructor at Southern Oregon University and also the Director of Rogue Chorus at Rogue Community College. Bernadette recently sang as a soloist for Handel’s Messiah with the Roseburg Concert Chorale and as a professional member of the Southern Oregon Repertory Singers. Future projects include Music Directing for Camelot Theater Company, evaluating for the SOMEA Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival, and teaching at Umpqua Community College.
Born from uncommon versatility as a composer and performer, Derek Keller’s music explores hybridity between contemporary concert music, jazz, and rock. Currently, he is crafting multimedia works in his Modular Music Project. These pieces combine live performance, formal modularity, and the audience’s mobile devices to create experiences along the deterministic–improvisational–aleatoric continuum to address socio-political challenges of our moment. Derek has received commissions from Loadbang, SACRA/PROFANA, Citywater, Empyrean Ensemble, Fondation Royaumont, Redfish-BlueFish, NOISE, JitaZax, Cantoria, and Cappella Gloriana. His music has been performed in the Americas, Europe, China, and Australia. Derek is also an Assistant Professor of Music at Southern Oregon University, where he directs the Music Industry & Production Program.
Gesture is a musical program based on extra-musical works. Physicality is apparent in musical performances, but perhaps the most observable in a percussion performance. Gesture will present works where movement, choreography, and theatre are the focal point, while music, although still present, takes a supporting role. In this program, the lines between music and movement are blurred as Jade works towards his goal of bridging the gap between the arts.
American percussionist Jade Hails is a dynamic presence on and offstage. Combining theatrics and technical performance in a musical amalgamation, Jade has committed his career to bridging the gap between the arts. Offering his skill set to other artists in ways that utilize their work, Jade curates collaborations based on poetry and literature, as well as visual art and dance. Currently based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Jade performs and teaches in Canada, bringing his insights and methods to the City of Glass.
